Although the Coupeville High School boys basketball team lost 85-55 at Port Townsend Saturday, Feb. 4, in its final regular season game, the Wolves qualified for the district tournament by placing third in the Olympic League.

Chimacum clipped Klahowya 56-41 Saturday, pushing the Cowboys (4-5, 4-13) a game ahead of Coupeville into second place and dropping the Eagles (2-7, 4-15) a game behind the Wolves (3-6, 3-15) in the final Olympic League standings.

Coupeville begins the postseason by hosting the Nisqually League’s fourth-place team in a loser-out game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9. If the Wolves win, they will play another loser-out game at the No. 2 Nisqually team at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11.

The Nisqually League wraps up its season Monday, Feb. 6, and there is a tight race for the 2, 3 and 4 seeds. Vashon Island (6-1, 12-7) has clinched the title, but Cascade Christian (4-3, 8-11), Seattle Christian (4-3, 11-8) and Bellevue Christian (3-4, 9-10) are bunched behind the leaders.

Port Townsend (9-0, 15-4) completed an unbeaten Olympic League season with the win over Coupeville Saturday.

The Redhawks scooted to a 23-9 first-quarter and were never threatened. They led 45-26 at halftime and 67-40 after the third quarter.

Hunter Smith had a big game for the Wolves, hitting four three-pointers on the way to 21 points. Ethan Spark drained a couple of treys and finished with 14 points.

Joey Lippo and Brian Shank each scored 6 points, and Gabe Wynn and Cameron Toomey-Stout had 4 apiece.

Four Redhawks tallied 16 or more points, topped by Detrius Kelsall with six three-balls and 25 points.
