The Lakewood High School boys basketball team cruised to a 23-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 78-38 win at Coupeville Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The Cougars combined Coupeville turnovers with several three-point shots to establish the early lead. From there Lakewood led 38-14 and 63-28 at the end of the second and third quarters.
Ryan Alford scored 23 points and added seven rebounds and five steals for Lakewood, and five Cougars scored at least eight points.
Aaron Trumbull paced the Wolves with eight points. Aaron Curtin scored six, Nick Streubel six, Drew Chan five, Carson Risner four, Ben Etzell four, Josh Wilsey two and Caleb Valko two.
Coupeville coach Anthony Smith said his team got into foul trouble early and several key members had to sit significant minutes. Three, Risner, Trumbull and Chan, eventually fouled out, and two finished with four fouls.
Smith said, “We had a little better effort than our last game. There are still some positives; we still could get a few wins. It would be nice to get one for the seniors.”
Coupeville (0-2, 0-5) entertains Island rival South Whidbey (0-2, 1-5) Friday, Dec. 14, in a double header.
The varsity girls begin at 5:15 p.m. and the boys follow at 7.
