Baseball: Coupeville errors fuel Cedarcrest win

A 13-run third inning by host Cedarcrest buried the Coupeville High School baseball team in a 20-1 five-inning game Wednesday, March 23.

Coupeville (1-3, 0-2) picked up two quick outs in the third and then its defense collapsed. The Red Wolves (4-1, 4-0) took advantage of the mistakes, many which were on “routine plays,” according to coach Willie Smith.

Smith said, “They (Cedarcrest) hit well again but we played horribly behind Ian (Smith), again. Too many simple mistakes on routine plays forcing our pitchers to throw extra each inning.”

Offensively, the Wolves picked up hits from Alex McClain, Jake Tumblin, Wade Schaef and Morgan Payne.

Coupeville plays a make-up, nonleague game at Concrete (0-3) Friday, March 25, at 4 p.m. and then gets back into conference play Monday, March 28, at home with Lakewood (4-0) at 4.
