Girls basketball: Weary Wolves stopped by Lakewood

A fatigued Coupeville girls basketball team lost to visiting Lakewood 41-26 Friday, Jan. 14.

Coming off a thrilling and hard-fought win over Sultan the previous night, the weary Wolves struggled against the well-rested Cougars (3-4, 4-9).

Coupeville coach Jackie Bykonen said the fatigue was evident in the Wolves’ shooting. “Everything was short,” she said because her shooters “didn’t have any legs.”

Bykonen said she wanted her team “to push the ball more” but it couldn’t.

Bykonen added that Coupeville played a less-taxing zone about half the night to help preserve some energy. She said, “We played man at the end and Lakewood didn’t handle it very well. We will do more of it next time.”

Cassidi Rosenkrance topped Coupeville in scoring with eight points. Bykonen praised Rosenkrance’s effort as the point-guard is playing in pain with a leg injury.

Kendra O’Keefe scored seven points, Amanda Manker four, Courtney Arnold two, Taya Boonstra two, Katie Smith one, Jai’Lysa Hoskins one and Bessie Walstad one.

Boonstra had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Wolves (1-6, 2-10) entertain Cedarcrest (4-2, 7-5) Tuesday, Jan. 18, and then King’s (6-1, 9-4) Friday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m.
