Boys Soccer: Coupeville wins thriller over Cedarcrest

Published 9:15 am Thursday, April 8, 2010

It was thrilling and historical.

The Coupeville boys’ soccer team defeated visiting Cedarcrest 1-0 in double overtime Tuesday, April 6.

With just 10 seconds left in the second overtime, Jordan Lamb picked up a loose ball in the goal mouth and lobbed in the match’s only goal.

The win was the Wolves first over Cedarcrest. Cedarcrest (3-3, 3-5) was the only team Coupeville hadn’t beaten since starting a soccer program five years ago.

Coupeville goalkeeper Evan Ameluxen-Coleman recorded the shutout.

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said, “The defense stepped up late in the game; it was our best defensive effort of the season.”

Mendes added that Ameluxen-Coleman made some “key saves,” and “so did our other defenders.”

Offensively, Mendes said the Wolves created “a lot of chances and played really well.”

After losing four of their first five matches, all by one goal, the Wolves (3-3, 3-4) have now won two in a row. Mendes said, “We turned the corner.”

Coupeville will have its hands full Thursday, April 8, when South Whidbey comes to town for a 6 p.m. match. The Falcons currently lead the Cascade Conference with a 5-1 record.
