Talented Kings too much for Lady Wolves

There is no disgrace in losing to a team that is simply better than you are.

Combine the talents of the King’s Lady Knights volleyball team and the distractions of homecoming week, and it’s very apparent why Coupeville was beaten in three games on Tuesday.

The undefeated Lady Knights played a near-perfect match utilizing a combination of crisp sets and powerful kills to defeat the Lady Wolves 25-8, 25-13 and 25-7.

“I think we just played ourselves out after that five-game match against Lakewood,” senior Leah Mouw said. “We got kind of intimidated before today’s match started and that brought us down.”

Coupeville coach Toni Crebbin said the girls knew they were going to be playing against a good team.

“It didn’t help that I had my Lebeiro, the defensive specialist, Hayley Ebersole, out sick so I had a freshman, Megan Smith, in there,” Crebbin said. “Before the match, Sarah Burgoyne came back from the doctor and she has strep throat. King’s has a good team, no doubt about it, and I can’t take anything away from them. That’s just the way it goes.”

After dropping the first game, the Lady Wolves pulled together a bit in the second game.

“We got really good passes on Thursday against Lakewood, but we didn’t pull it together today,” sophomore setter Anna Myhr said.

Coupeville played at South Whidbey on Thursday and hosts Granite Falls in a 7 p.m. match Tuesday, Oct. 10.

“We’ve seen everyone in the league now and we know how they play and what they’ll try to do against us,” Crebbin said.

After the first half of the season, the Lady Wolves are 2-5 in league matches and 3-5 overall.
