Wolves overcome early deficit / Soccer

Coming from two goals down, the Coupeville High School soccer team rallied to tie Mount Vernon Christian 2-2 Saturday, Sept. 28, at Mickey Clark Field.

The Hurricanes came into the match with a 5-1 record and jumped to an early lead, but the Wolves, who now sport a 0-5-2 record, did not back down.

Mount Vernon Christian scored the game’s first two goals on a deflection and a free kick, then the Wolves’ Eryn Wood snuck a shot under the Hurricane keeper just before halftime to swing the momentum Coupeville’s way.

“We came back in the second half and really applied a lot more pressure, just missing on a number of opportunities,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said.

Avalon Renninger didn’t miss her chance, nailing a penalty kick that knotted the score in the non-league match.

The competition will take another step up as Coupeville hosts unbeaten South Whidbey (3-0, 6-0) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1.
