Thank you for your editorial urging responsible action in confronting climate change. Washington state is poised to be a leader and model for other states in constructively confronting climate chaos and creating a resilient economy.

Several bills — HB 2338, HB 2402, SB6253 — are moving in Olympia. The most important is Senate Bill 6203, which taxes carbon-based fuel suppliers, then after bolstering education will fund efforts to prepare our state for thriving in a climate-changing world.

Please let Sen. Barbara Bailey and Reps. Dave Hayes and Norma Smith know we want them to support this urgent legislation.

Sewage overflows we saw recently are indicative of the greater levels of precipitation predicted by a warming world. We are setting records.

Hurricane Harvey dumped 55 inches of rain, equivalent to Niagara Falls’ flow for 509 days, on Houston, Texas. At 16, 2017 tied 2012 for the most weather-related events costing more than a billion dollars. It far surpassed 2012 in magnitude. Last year’s three hurricanes cost more than $300 billion. These numbers do not include the human costs: Lack of water, electricity and employment have caused five to six million people to leave Puerto Rico post Maria. Puerto Rico like Syria is a poster child for climate inaction.
