Winning two singles matches and two doubles matches, the Coupeville High School tennis team nipped visiting Port Townsend/Chimacum 4-3 to take the season opener Monday, March 17.

Though the game was played in Coupeville, the teams chose to play the non-league match in the format used in the Olympic League: three singles and four doubles. The Wolves, a member of the Cascade Conference, usually play two singles and three doubles per match.

Coupeville picked up wins in first and second singles from Allie Hanigan (6-3, 6-1) and Jacki Ginnings (6-1, 7-6[9-7]). The third and fourth doubles teams of Ana Luvera/Valen Trujillo (6-2, 6-1) and Maureen Rice/Haleigh Deasy (6-0, 6-1) earned the other team points.

Hanigan used a finesse game to take first singles, according to coach Ken Stange. “Once she shook off the opening-day jitters, she took firm control of the match,” he added.

Ginnings made her varsity singles debut and was “mentally tough” and won with hustle and scrappy tennis, according to Stange.

The veteran Luvera teamed with rookie Trujillo to overpower their opponents, Stange said. “No matter who they play at No. 3, they’ll be tough to beat.”

Micky LeVine dropped the third singles match 6-1, 6-2; Samantha Martin and Sydney Aparicio fell in first doubles 6-2, 6-4; and MaKenzie Bailey and Wynter Thorne lost in second doubles 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.

LeVine, generally a doubles player in the past, is still learning the art of playing singles, Stange said, and Martin and Aparicio “may face some struggles early, but they have skills and both have high ceilings.”

Stange likes the aggressiveness of Bailey and Thorne, and once the pair harnesses that emotion, they “will befuddle opponents.”

The Wolves host Friday Harbor at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18.
