Soon after the Coupeville High School girls basketball team finished its league schedule unbeaten and atop the Olympic League standings, the Wolves tennis team began preparation for its season. Tennis coach Ken Stange, referring to the basketball team’s success, asked, “Why not us?”

Why not, indeed.

Stange’s squad wrapped up its own undefeated Olympic League season (6-0) with a 6-1 win at Chimacum Thursday, May 7. The win was the Wolves 10th straight; they finished the year with an 11-3 overall record.

During the streak, they avenged losses to two of teams that beat them in nonleague matches early in the season.

Now the Wolves can focus on the Olympic League 1A tournament, which is Tuesday, May 12, at Port Townsend.

The top two finishers in singles and doubles will advance to the District 3 tournament at noon Wednesday, May 20, at the Charles Wright Academy in University Place. The district champions will earn state berths.

In the win over Chimacum, the Wolves won all three singles matches: 1, Jacki Ginnings won 6-0, 6-1; 2, Wynter Thorne won 6-2, 4-6, 10-8; 3, Ivy Luvera won 6-1, 7-6(7-5).

Coupeville also collected wins in three doubles matches: 2, Micky LeVine/Sydney Autio won 6-4, 6-4; 3, McKenzie Bailey/Jazmine Franklin won 2-6, 6-1, 10-7; 4, Ana Luvera/McKenzie Meyer won 6-3, 6-1.

Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger lost 6-1, 6-1 in first doubles.

In JV action, Coupeville winners were Bree Daigneault/Haleigh Deasy (6-4), Hanna Seiffert/Kameryn St. Onge (6-3) and Maggie Crimmins/Ashley Smith (6-4).

“The girls could have let off the gas pedal, but they chose not to do so,” Stange said. “Despite struggling on four courts, we still won on three of them.”
