Wolves win twice; now tied for league lead / Softball

The Coupeville High School softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Sultan Friday, May 3, to move into a tie for first place in the North Sound Conference.

The Wolves beat the Turks 7-4 and 15-2 in five innings.

The two wins coupled with Granite Falls’ 13-7 loss to Cedar Park Christian Friday placed Coupeville (8-3, 11-7) into a tie for first with the Tigers (8-3, 11-7). Cedar Park Christian (7-3, 12-4) is just a half game back.

Coupeville and Granite Falls have one conference game remaining. The Wolves travel to South Whidbey (2-8, 5-11) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, while Granite Falls goes to Sultan (1-9, 1-12) Thursday.

CPC plays Sultan Tuesday and South Whidbey Thursday.

Coupeville 7, Sultan 4

It took awhile for the Wolves to shake last-place Sultan.

“Came out a little flat, probably due to the anticipation and jitters of Senior Night,” coach Kevin McGranahan said. “We battled and eventually came out on top. Not pretty, but it is a win.”

Coupeville led by only one, 2-1, heading into the fourth inning. It then scored twice and added another run in the fifth to push the lead to 5-1.

The Turks tallied three times in the top of the sixth to get back into the game, 5-4.

The Wolves tacked on two insurance runs in its half of the inning.

Sarah Wright singled twice and scored three runs to lead the offense. Scout Smith added two base hits and two runs, and Veronica Crownover singled and drove in two runs.

Emma Mathusek, Chelsea Prescott and Nicole Laxton all singled, and Mollie Bailey walked three times.

Izzy Wells picked up the pitching win.

Coupeville 15, Sultan 2 (five innings)

Sultan jumped to a 2-0 lead, then Coupeville’s offense came alive, scoring six runs in both the second and third innings.

Prescott blasted a three-run double and a two-run single and scored three runs. Smith finished with a single, three walks, three runs and two RBI.

Coral Caveness singled twice and scored three runs, and Mathusek turned two walks into two runs.

Bailey doubled, Wright added a pair of singles and Mackenzie Davis had a base hit.

Sultan led off the game with a single, which turned out to be the only hit of starter Smith, who had four strikeouts and only one walk.

“We came out hitting on all cylinders in the second game and quickly took control,” McGranahan said. “Our bags finally woke up.”
