Chimacum put up more of a fight this time, but the Coupeville High School girls basketball team clipped the visiting Cowboys 53-38 on Senior Night Friday, Feb. 6.

Coupeville (8-0, 14-5) will look to finish the conference season undefeated when it plays at second-place Klahowya (4-4, 4-13) at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, in the regular-season finale.

The Wolves will play in the district tournament at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Sumner High School. Coupeville’s opponent has yet to be decided.

Chimacum (2-6, 3-15) trailed 25-2 at halftime the last time it met Coupeville. This time, trying to keep its playoff hopes alive, Chimacum was down only five, 14-9, at the end of the first quarter.

Makana Stone scored nine points for the Wolves in the opening quarter.

The Cowboys’ Kiersten Snyder opened the second period with a three-ball, trimming the deficit to two. The Wolves then went on a 12-0 run and Chimacum never cut the lead to less than 10 the rest of the way.

The 12-0 burst was fueled by a technical on the Chimacum bench, which resulted in a six-point swing. Madeline Strasburg drained four consecutive free throws, then Stone scored after Coupeville was awarded the ball out of bounds.

The Wolves led 30-16 at halftime

Five different Wolves scored in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 40-25.

Stone, who finished with 27 points, tacked on nine in the fourth quarter. The junior also finished the game with 15 rebounds, three assists, three steals and four blocks.

“Makana had an outstanding game,” coach David King said. “She has elevated her game over the past four games. Her drive and determination, along with others, pushes us to play as a team and strive to be the best we can.”

Kacie Kiel had eight points and three assists, and Strasburg added seven points and four steals.

Julia Myers scored six points, Monica Vidoni two and McKenzie Bailey, Mia Littlejohn and Hailey Hammer one each.

Snyder scored 16 points for the Cowboys.

King said the Wolves committed a season high in turnovers, possibly from being “emotionally charged” because of Senior Night.

“I believe these emotions took us out of our game,” King said. “Chimacum came ready to and stepped up their game. They are playing for the last playoff spot, so they are in playoff mode already.

“The effort was there all game long with players diving for loose balls, wanting to make the extra pass and make it a special game for the seniors. I can’t fault that kind of effort; we just need to separate emotions like Senior Night from playing our game.”

The game was the final home contest for seniors Myers, Kiel, Strasburg, Vidoni, Hammer and Wynter Thorne.

“I’m proud of the effort from all six seniors,” King said. “They have really stepped up throughout the season.”
