The Coupeville High School girls basketball team defeated Darrington 47-31 Friday, Dec. 5, but couldn't complete at a sweep of weekend home games and lost 52-51 Saturday to Bellevue Christian.

The Wolves, now 2-1, host Mount Baker, also 2-1, at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8.

In the win over Darrington, the Wolves received four points each from McKenzie Bailey and Makana Stone as they built a 16-11 first-quarter lead.

Stone added nine points in the second period and the Coupeville defense limited the Loggers to two points, helping the Wolves to a 28-13 lead at the break.

Coupeville led 33-20 heading into the final period.

All eight Wolves scored, topped by Stone with 17.

Monica Vidoni finished with seven points; Hailey Hammer five; Julia Myers, Mia Littlejohn, Winter Thorne and Bailey four each; and Kacie Kiel two.

Stone recorded a double-double by adding 13 rebounds. She also had three assists and two blocks.

Myers and Vidoni grabbed seven rebounds, and Littlejohn had three steals and three assists.

Coach David King said his club’s patience on offense enabled it to exploit the Loggers’ extended man-to-man defense.

There were a lot of “what ifs” in the one-point loss to Bellevue Christian. The most glaring was the in ability to hit free throws. Coupeville made only three of 11 while the Vikings sank 16 of 22.

The Wolves were also unable to hold an early lead, zipping out of the gate with eight consecutive points. Midway through the second quarter, Bellevue Christian took its first lead, 17-16, and it was close the rest of the way.

Coupeville led 25-24 at halftime.

Hammer and Myers scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to give the Wolves a 29-24 lead, then BC went on a 12-2 run to go up 37-31. It was 37-34 heading into the fourth period.

Coupeville fell behind by five, 42-37, then regained the lead on consecutive hoops by Stone, Kiel and Myers, the latter coming off a nice assist from Vidoni with 4:28 left in the game.

The Vikings bounced right back with its own six-point run.

Kiel scored with just over a minute left to trim the gap to 50-47, then Hammer converted on an inbounds play after a BC turnover with 37 seconds remaining.

Two Viking free throws made it 52-49, and BC held off the Wolves, who hit a two-pointer at the buzzer.

Stone had 14 points, Kiel 10, Vidoni nine, Hammer six, Myers five, Bailey four and Thorne three.

Stone registered another good all-around game, adding six rebounds, eight steals and seven assists.

Myers had six boards and Kiel five assists.

Kathleen Crosby had 12 points and Jessica Berg 10 for the Vikings.

The Wolves played both games without starting guard Madeline Strasburg, who is out with an injured knee.
