Another day, another win for the Coupeville High School tennis team.
The Wolves won their sixth straight match by tripping host Friday Harbor 4-1 Wednesday, April 29.
Valen Trujillo won in second singles 6-4, 6-1.
“She was a bit rusty in the first half of the opening set, but she started to find her form as she headed into the second,” coach Ken Stange said.
The Wolves captured all three doubles matches: 1, Payton Aparicio/Sage Renninger won 6-3, 6-2; 2, McKenzie Bailey/Wynter Thorne won 6-3, 6-0; and 3, Sydney Autio/Jazmine Franklin won 6-2, 6-0.
Stange said Aparicio and Renninger are “finding their groove.” The freshman pair have “learned quite a bit from their losses; it’s good for them to gain the wisdom that comes from putting an opponent down,” he added.
“Wynter and McKenzie have played a lot of tennis together, and they put that experience to work, getting off the court in short order,” Stange said.
In regard to third doubles, Stange said, “Having Sydney at No. 3 is almost unfair. What’s more, Jazmine was knocking the fuzz off the ball today. Their match was over in what seemed like the blink of an eye.”
Coupeville’s lone loss came in first singles where Jacki Ginnings fell 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.
The Wolves also won three JV matches: Ana Luvera/Ivy Luvera won 8-2; Micky LeVine/McKenzie Meyer won 8-0; and Bree Daigneault/Haleigh Deasy won 4-0.
Coupeville (2-0, 7-3) goes to Klahowya (0-2, 1-8) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30. The teams will finish a match they started last Thursday that was stopped because of rain before competing in the regularly scheduled match.
