Wolves trample Turks / Softball

After a lethargic beginning, the Coupeville High School softball team steamrolled host Sultan 12-0 in six innings Thursday, March 28.

“We came out a little flat in the first but quickly hit our stride,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said.

The Wolves were missing several players because of a band trip but still roughed up the Turks with 12 hits and an errorless defense.

“Defensively we played much better…and the outfield bounced back nicely as I knew they would,” McGranahan said. “All in all, it was a good game to focus on the basics.”

The Wolves plated three runs in the second and then pushed home six more in the third to pull away.

Scout Smith pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out five. She also rapped three singles, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Veronica Crownover stroked three singles and a double, and Sarah Wright had a single and double.

Emma Mathusek doubled and drove in four runs, Chelsea Prescott tripled and collected two RBI and Coral Caveness singled.

The Wolves (2-1, 4-3) moved into a tie for first place in the North Sound Conference with the win. They play non-league doubleheader at Forks Saturday, March 30. Coupeville takes on Fife at 1 p.m. and then the host school at 2:30 p.m.
