Wolves split set with Friday Harbor

Girls and boys win and lose

“According to head coach Randy King, one of the presents that he received from Santa this year was Ty Blouin and Pat Bennett. The two seniors, who had missed the first part of the season due to injuries, made their 2000-2001 debut during the team’s tournament at South Whidbey High School Dec. 28-29. The result has been a 1-2 record, including a loss at home Wednesday to Friday Harbor, 69-58.I think it’s going to take a little while to get our chemistry back because we have been playing with out them (Blouin and Bennett) for about a month now, said Coupeville player Geoff Hageman. It’s like fitting two brand new people into the squad and you have to get used to it, but once it happens we will be pretty good. During the absence of Bennet and Blouin, Good picked up the scoring slack for the team.I don’t know that we had chemistry before, said King. A lot of the time we just sat and watched Chris play.Coupeville played physical against Friday Harbor during the first quarter to the point that the Wolves committed eight fouls during the period and sent their opponents to the line 11 times. The extremely physical quarter resulted in the home team Wolves heading into the second quarter down by one. During the second quarter the Wolves gained their only substantial lead of the game as they went on a 13-4 run. We had a good run there in the second and things were going well, said King. That was the first place that we opened it up at all.But the second half would belong to Friday Harbor as the Wolverines would take control from beyond the arch. Tyler Williams of Friday Harbor came out blazing during the third as he hit three consecutive bombs for nine of his 28 points on the night. It was hard because Williams was hitting threes time after time and we just needed some points, said Hageman. We needed to get the ball down to pour post players and get three point plays with a foul but that just didn’t happen enough. The Wolves never found an answer for Williams’ plethora of three pointers as he hit six of Friday Harbor’s seven. We played him tough, said King. He is not going to hit his shots every night but he sure hit them tonight. The silver lining for the Wolves would be the play of Bennett, who led the team with 16 points and Noah Roehl, who had 15 points and five rebounds. Chris Good led the team with eight rebounds. The Wolves never seemed to get back on track during the second half as they only had the lead once, during the opening second of the third. During their tournament the Wolves split their games by defeating South Whidbey 57-41 and then losing to Cedarcrest 76-56.We have a pretty strong team right now, said Bennett. And when we get flowing it is great. But we just need to win from here on out.Coupeville played Orcas last night but the results were not available at press time. Coupeville GirlsAfter losing two games during their tournament at Port Townsend the Coupeville girls brought out tenacious defense and a hot bench Wednesday as they torched Friday Harbor 57-30.I think we were all a little down after the tournament last week, said head coach Greg Oldham. But we knew that if we played to our level we would really take it to some teams. This is starting off the league season and by getting a win it will definitely help us with practice tomorrow and our game on Friday, said Tracy Taylor about the players’ confidence. The game, which was no where as close as the final score might indicate, was all Coupeville during the first half. Friday Harbor probably knew they were in trouble when the Wolves offense jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Coupeville never let up for the remainder of the first half as the Wolves took a 36-11 lead into half time. I told them at the half that excellence is habit Aristotle said, not an act, said Oldham. One of the reasons success of offense was the play of Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby who had 10 assists. The Wolves defense played so hard that the full court press looked more like a swarm of bumble bees around the Wolverines offense. We are going to press everybody on every possession until we are up by 30, said Oldham. Brianne King continued to shoot well as she hit four three-pointers and had 25 points on the night, 23 of which came during the first half. Brianne (King) shot really well tonight and when their is exciting things going on it helps to keep the bench in the game, said Carly Guillory.During the second half the scoring from non-starters was huge for the Wolves as Guillory had a season high nine points. That doubled her career number of points in one game, said Oldham. We had a lot of people with four and they may not have had big numbers but balanced scoring. The Wolves ended the night with seven players who managed to score. The bench gives us the starters the confidence to play even better, said Taylor. We know that if we make mistakes there will be someone their to clean up. Coupeville lost to Ilwaco, 69-35 and according to Oldham a second quarter fraut with mistakes cost the Wolves their game against Chimacum, 45-44.The tournament helped a lot because we got to play a lot tougher teams, said Taylor. We had to play up to their level and you can’t fall down. Coupeville played Orcas last night but the results were not available at press time. “
