The Coupeville High School baseball team got off to a rough Cascade Conference start with a 10-0, no-hit loss at Cedarcrest Monday, March 19.
Nick Gagner fired the five-inning no-hitter and struck out eight; he was backed by an errorless defense and a 12-hit attack.
Coupeville coach Willie Smith said the tough day was “a combination of the best pitcher we have faced, a very good hitting team and a lack of confidence on our part.”
He added that pitchers Brandt Bodamer and Wade Schaef were victims of mental or physical errors on the part of the Wolves’ defense.
Smith said, “Give them (Cedarcrest) credit because they are very strong and have their entire staff back from last year and only lost one significant starter, but we were very disappointed in our approach to the game, mentally.
Good news is that we have them again on Wednesday to see if we can return to the form that had us playing better baseball in our first three games.”
The game Wednesday is at 4 p.m. in Coupeville (2-2).
