“Although small in numbers, the Coupeville Wolves produced some mighty strong efforts at last Saturday’s Northwest A League boys and girls track meet in Everett Memorial Stadium.Coupeville sent just nine boys and six girls to the meet. Yet, the Wolves managed to bring home 10 first places.The boys team had four firsts. Joe Donnellon won two events for the boys. Donnellon captured the 1,600 with a time of 4:39.1 and the 3,200 with a time of 10:40.2.Matt Frost won the 800 with a time of 2:15.8 and took second in the 400. Rich Wilson won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet.In the team standings, the boys finished fifth out of six teams with 67 points. Concrete was the overall winner with 123 points.The girls team took second to LaConner. Coupeville had 85 points while LaConner was first with 103.Freshman Brianne King was double winner for Coupeville. King won the 1,600 in 5:57.2 and the 800 in 2:43.3.Jess Roundy took the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.5. She was a close second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.5. LaConner’s Deanne Huizenga just nipped Roundy, winning in 49.4. Janae Socha was also a close second in the 100 with a time of 13.6, barely getting beat by Friday Harbor’s Marina Bull, who was first in 13.5.Yashmeen Knox won the javelin with a throw of 91 feet, 4 inches. She was second in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Heather White won the 200 in 29.5. Coupeville’s other first place came in the 400 relay, which was comprised of Knox, Socha, Roundy, and King. The team had a winning time of 55.0 seconds.WILDCATS SUFFER FIRST LOSS: The Oak Harbor tennis team lost its first match of the season Friday, falling to Edmonds-Woodway 4-3. No. 1 singles Stacie Pate, No. 2 singles Charissa Brecht, and the No. 1 doubles team of Jenna Wehrell and Nicole Nolte accounted for Oak Harbor’s victories.WOLVES FALL TO ATM: Coupeville’s softball team pounded out 12 hits but it wasn’t enough to defeat Archbishop Thomas Murphy last Friday as the Wolves lost 13-8. Suzy Zustiak had three hits, one a home run, to pace Coupeville. Erica Lamb, Michelle Martin, Tracy Taylor, and April Bagby each had two hits.CATS’ GET BLANKED: Oak Harbor played one of its better defensive games of the season but lost to Edmonds-Woodway 4-0 Tuesday. The Wildcats committed just one error.Coach Denny Zylstra was pleased with the effort, considering some varsity players were missing because they were on vacation.We really did play well, considering we had just a mixed team,” Zylstra said. Despite the one-sided loss, coach Willie Smith saw some bright spots from his young Wolves.Defensively we played a little bit better and we’re starting to get more comfortable at the plate, Smith said. We’re still trying to put everything together.Justin Barnes accounted for most of Coupeville’s scoring with a grand slam.TERRACE TROUNCES CATS: Oak Harbor’s baseball team, coming off its biggest win of the season, had its most embarrassing loss of the season Friday when the Wildcats lost to Mountlake Terrace 9-1.Oak Harbor, which had defeated highly-regarded Kamiak 5-3 Wednesday, had hitting and defensive problems Friday. The Wildcats committed eight errors. Prior to Friday, Oak Harbor had made just nine errors in seven games.We didn’t field the ball, we didn’t hit. It was a real disaster, Oak Harbor coach Jim Waller said. We had been playing so well. I thought we had reached the point where we would be competitive in every game.Mountlake Terrace broke open the contest with seven runs in the fifth inning. Oak Harbor aided Mountlake Terrace with three errors in the inning. Out of the nine runs Mountlake Terrace scores, just one was earned.Meanwhile starting pitcher Clint Striker struck out 10 Wildcats.David Walton was Oak Harbor’s leading hitter, going 2 for 4 and driving in a run.We beat a good team and a good pitcher. Maybe our kids thought they could show up and win. We struggled a bit early, then things started to snowball. We didn’t handle the adversity very well, Waller said.”
