Playing an outstanding all-around game, the Coupeville High School baseball team crushed host Concrete 13-0 in five innings Thursday, March 27.

“It was a great game for us: pitching, defense and hitting,” said coach Willie Smith. “It was great to see us come out and score early and often and hit the ball consistently and hard. We played like we were the better team and we never let off the gas until the last out, which was very encouraging.”

The Wolves scored three in the first and second innings, five in the third and two in the fourth to cruise to the win.

They collected 14 hits, with five players recording more than one: Kurtis Smith, 3-for-4, double, three RBI; Ben Etzell, 3-for-3, double, three RBI; Morgan Payne 2-or-3, double, four RBI; Aaron Curtin, 3-for-3, RBI; and Aaron Trumbull, 2-for-3, two runs.

“We hit the ball throughout our lineup and there wasn’t really any cheap hits; they were all hit hard,” coach Smith said.

Coupeville was even more dominate on defense. Etzell and Korbin Korzan combined for a one-hitter. Etzell struck out all six batters he faced; Korzan added five more.

“(Korzan) did a very good job of continuing to get better on the mound,” coach Smith said. “It was a great outing for him and for us because he can be a major factor for us on the mound if he continues to throw with the confidence and control he’s shown in his two outings so far.”

Coupeville (2-1, 3-1) travels to Nooksack Valley (2-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29, for its final non-league game.

Next week, the Wolves face powerhouse Archbishop Murphy (4-0, 4-2) in a three-tame series in a battle of two of the Cascade Conference’s top teams. Murphy hosts Monday, March 31, and Friday, April 4; and Coupeville hosts Wednesday, April 2, at 4 p.m.
