Wolves overcome slow start / Volleyball

After a flat start, the Coupeville High School volleyball team turned in a sharp performance in a 3-0 win at Sultan Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The win over the Turks (0-5, 3-6) helped the Wolves (4-1, 7-1) remain one game back of league-leading King’s in the North Sound Conference standings.

Coupeville defeated Sultan 25-23, 25-9, 25-14.

The shaky start, according to coach Cory Whitmore, can be attributed to “uncharacteristic misses serves.”

The Wolves misfired on eight.

“Putting those serves in creates a different story,” Whitmore said.

Other than the serving, the Wolves “played very clean,” Whitmore added, allowing Coupeville to pull out the game.

“I was happy to see us turn it around in the second, only making five hitting errors,” he added. “We passed and served well and carried that momentum into the third and maintained a lead the entire way.

“I’m proud of the way that we turned around and fixed exactly what we needed to.”

Whitmore lauded the play of Emma Smith and Hannah Davdison, who both finished with zero hitting errors.

Smith pounded six kills and Davidson four. Davidson also recorded two aces, and Smith had an ace and block.

Maya Toomey-Stout added 10 kills, nine digs and two aces.

Scout Smith registered 21 assists and three aces, and Ashely Menges had five aces.

Coupeville entertains Cedar Park Christian (2-3, 6-4) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11.
