Wolves nearly knock off undefeated Klahowya / Soccer

Klahowya Secondary School, unbeaten in four years of Olympic League 1A soccer, almost met its match Monday, April 16, in Silverdale.

The Eagles slipped in a goal in the final two minutes to escape with a 3-2 win over Coupeville.

With the win, Klahowya all put wrapped up another conference crown. The Eagles are 5-0 in league play and 8-2-1 overall. Second-place Coupeville fell to 3-2 (4-5-2).

With four league matches remaining, the Wolves could catch the Eagles, but Klahowya would need to lose at least two matches to Port Townsend and/or Chimacum, who are a combined 1-12 this season.

“We feel pretty good about our effort,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said after pushing undefeated Klahowya to the wire. “Great effort against a strong team.”

About 10 minutes into the match, the Eagles’ scored the game’s first goal. The Wolves’ Derek Leyva knotted the score midway through the first half.

Then came “the bad one,” according to Nelson. Coupeville conceded a goal just before the break.

“We came back and played very determined the second half, getting an equalizer with about 20 minutes left on another Derek Leyva goal,” Nelson said.

“Unfortunately, they got the winning goal with two minutes to play.”

Leyva’s two goals gives him 18 for the season, two short of his cousin Abraham Leyva’s school record.

Coupeville plays at Port Townsend (1-3, 1-6) at 6 p.m. Friday, April 20.
