“The Coupeville girls and boys basketball teams earned two much-needed victories Tuesday as the Wolves defeated Concrete, 68-40 and the boys beat the Lions, 71-47.A second half drubbing of Concrete, 40-12, helped the girls pick up their fifth Northwest A victory and take a step closer to the playoffs.The kids just picked up the intensity, said head coach Greg Oldham.The first half saw the Lions stay with Coupeville because of missed opportunities on the boards defensively by the Wolves. Concrete had 13 offensive rebounds that led to a majority of their points during the first half. But things changed during the second half, mainly Coupeville’s defense. We made an adjustment to full-court pressure and went on a 14-0 run, said Oldham.The Wolves held the Lions to just three points during the third. We scored as much during the final four seconds as they did during the quarter, said Oldham.According to Oldham, a big reason for the win was the leadership and play of senior Laura Young, who scored 12 points and had five assists and five rebounds. This is the point of the year when you want your seniors to show their leadership and experience and she did that, said Oldham.Sophomore Brianne King led all scorers with 21 and junior Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby had 16 points, 4 assist and six steals. BoysThe Coupeville boys also had a huge second half as they outscored their opponents, 45-22, as they earned a Northwest A victory. Three-pointers were the name of the game for the Wolves as they canned 10 for the game, a season high for Coupeville. The Wolves were led from beyond the arc by Brad Sherman’s five threes resulting in 17 points for the sophomore. We need some outside scoring, said Coupeville boys’ head coach Randy King. But we will take scoring any way we can get it. The first half was slowed by the Lions’ style of play, according to King. They ran an old North Carolina stall game, said King. They just passed the ball until they got a layin. At one point the Lions stalled for almost three minutes with pass after pass. Despite getting into foul trouble during the first half, junior Chris Good got hot during the third as he scored all of his 11 points for the game. Every player for Coupeville scored during the game.
