Although the Coupeville High School soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime at King’s Friday, April 26, it is primed for the post season which begins Wednesday, May 1.

The eighth-seeded Wolves (2-12, 3-16) travel to top-seeded Lynden’s Bender Fields to face Lynden Christian (8-5-3) at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a loser-out match.

Coupeville and the Lyncs faced one common opponent this year, Friday Harbor. LC defeated Friday Harbor 2-0 Saturday. The Coupeville split with the Wolverines, losing 1-0 in the season opener and winning 5-1 two weeks ago.

If Coupeville defeats Lynden Christian, it will travel to the winner of fifth-seeded King’s (7-7, 7-8-1) and fourth-seeded Meridian (5-6-5) at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The top three teams in the eight-team tournament qualify for the tri-district tournament.

Coupeville is currently playing its best soccer of the season, winning three of its final five matches.

The Wolves, who lost to King’s 3-1 earlier this spring, pushed the Knights (7-7, 7-8-1) to overtime Friday.

Sean Donley scored the Coupeville goal and just missed a game-winner in OT.

King’s countered and scored a short time later to earn the win.

The Wolves played without several starters, including co-captain and defensive leader Luke Pelant.

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said his club “played very well” in spite of the missing players.

“Brett Arnold stepped up into that (Pelant’s) role, and did an excellent job,” Mendes said. “Nathan Lamb had another strong game with four dangerous shots in regulation time, forcing their goal keeper to make some fine saves.”

He added, “It was an intense game. Our boys were not intimidated, playing on their field and for their senior night. A number of our guys have shown recent improvement. They have grown in the quality of their play and confidence. It has been encouraging to see as we approach the post season.”
