Lakewood snuck by the host Coupeville volleyball team 3-1 Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Lakewood snuck by the host Coupeville volleyball team 3-1 Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The Cougars won the match 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20.

The Wolves stayed in each set with a series of comebacks, but Lakewood (2-0, 2-0) prevailed.

Coupeville coach Kirsty Croghan said her club pulled out the win in the second game because the players did “a great job of eliminating their own errors.”

The second-set win wasn’t the highlight for Croghan, however: “My favorite part of the night wasn’t the set we won but rather to see that the stuff the girls have been working on at practice is starting to click. Nothing is more rewarding for a coach than to see their players starting to understand the stuff they previously were struggling with. I cannot wait for the rest of our season and for everyone to see what these young ladies are capable of.”

Hailey Hammer led the offense with nine kills; Madeline Strasburg added six and Breeanna Messner five.

Amanda Fabrizi served three aces, and Messner and Megan Oakes had two each.

Oakes also had 23 assists and Kacie Kiel seven digs.

Serve receive stars, according to Croghan, were Fabrizi (28/31), Messner (12/12) and Haley Sherman (7/7).

“Overall, I am a very proud coach,” Crogan said. “The girls never gave up and pushed through at key times even though we trailed Lakewood in points throughout the match.”

She added, “Everyone kept approaching me after the match saying ‘your girls look good; that was fun to watch.'”

Coupeville (0-2, 1-2) goes to South Whidbey (1-1, 2-1) for a 7 p.m. match Thursday, Sept. 19.
