Coupeville singles player Aaron Curtin won twice at the District 3 1A tennis tournament at the Lakewood Racquet Club Thursday, Oct. 30, to reach the finals.

Curtin will play for the title Friday, Oct. 31.

Coupeville’s other entrants, singles player Sebastian Davis and the doubles team of Loren Nelson and Connor McCormick, split their matches and will play Friday in hopes of finishing third.

In the first round, Curtin and Davis each won.

Curtin pulled out a three-set win 7-6(8-6), 4-6, 6-3; Davis prevailed 6-2, 6-2.

The pair each faced a Charles Wright player in the second round, with Curtin winning 6-4, 6-1, and Davis losing 6-2, 6-1.

Davis will have to win twice Friday to secure third.

Nelson and McCormick won by default in the first round when one of their opponents withdrew because of a migraine.

That led to a second-round matchup with Charles Wright’s three-time state champions, the Grenley twins. The Grenleys won 6-0, 6-0.

Nelson and McCormick may have to play three matches Friday to snare third, coach Ken Stange said.
