Wolves continue Port Townsend’s woes / Softball

Coupeville continued Port Townsend’s misery on the softball diamond, defeating the host Redhawks 22-0 in five innings Friday, March 31.

Port Townsend has not won a game since the 1A Olympic League division was established three years ago and now owns 40-game losing streak.

Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan, knowing the Redhawks’ history, never played his normal starters all at once, played everyone on his roster and used two pitchers who had never thrown in a varsity game before.

Even taking his pedal off the medal, McGranahan said he “wasn’t proud of the score,” wishing he had done more to keep the score down.

The Wolves scored four runs in the first inning, two coming from Sarah Wright’s double.

A double by Lauren Rose and singles by Jae LeVine, Katrina McGranahan and Wright led to three runs in the second.

Kyla Briscoe hit a triple, Nicole Laxton and Wright doubled and LeVine singled in Coupeville’s seven-run third.

The Wolves scored four in the fourth on McGranahan’s grand slam.

Five walks led to four runs in the fifth.

Three Coupeville pitchers — McGranahan, Scout Smith and Mikayla Elfrank — combined to toss a no-hitter, striking out nine and walking two.

Wright was 3-for-4 with two doubles; McGranahan went 2-for-3 with the grand slam and scored four runs; Rose finished 2-for-3 with a double and four runs; LeVine had two hits and three runs; Briscoe tripled; Laxton doubled; and Robin Cedillo walked twice, scoring both times.

Reserves Smith, Emma Mathusek, MacKenzie Davis and Melia Welling all walked, and all but Davis scored.

Coupeville (2-0, 4-0) plays Blaine (1-5) in a non-league double header beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, April 3.
