Coming off a 2-1 victory Monday afternoon in Friday Harbor, the Wolf Pack had a return march against the Wolverines on Wednesday at Mickey Clark Field.
Prior to the beginning of the season, Coupeville head coach Paul Mendes said the Wolves had a strong team with a lot of determination, and Wednesday afternoon’s game proved him prophetic.
Junior forward Geoff Wacker gave Coupeville a 1-0 lead in the first period, before Friday Harbor’s Pablo Lopez tied the score four minutes into the second half.
Undaunted, sophomore Justin Adams put the Wolves back in front beating Wolverines’ goalkeeper Avery Adams at the 65-minute mark and Wacker tacked on an insurance goal 10 minutes later to seal the deal and up Coupeville’s season record to 2-0 in non-league games.
“We played much better today than we did when we played them up at Friday Harbor,” Mendes said. “We had better possessions and created some good, quality opportunities.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Amelexum-Coleman had an outstanding game in the net, filling in for the injured Joshua Adams, who broke and dislocated a finger putting the senior out of action.
“It doesn’t hurt anymore, I just can’t play,” Adams said, standing in back of the Coupeville bench with his hand wrapped.
Amelexum-Coleman made several great saves on point-blank shots by Friday Harbor and earned the praise of his coach.
“He did a nice job and really stepped up after we lost our No. 1 goalkeeper,” Mendes said. “That’s given our defense some confidence.”
Wacker, who scored the winning goal in Monday’s game gave his teammates a lot of credit for the victory.
“We played really well today and I can’t take all the credit,” he said. “The defense held up and that’s why we were up two goals. I got a lucky bounce on the first goal and a lucky curve in the second one.”
After giving up the tying goal early in the second half, the Wolves controlled the tempo of play and put a lot of pressure on the Wolverines’ net.
“We’re in a better position already than we were last year and that’s encouraging,” Mendes said.
Coupeville’s next home game is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 against Cascade Conference opponent, Sultan.
