The new look Coupeville High School girls basketball team got off to a slow start in the first half of Tuesday’s non-league game against Concrete.

But once the Wolves got warmed up in their first game of the season, it was lights out.

Coupeville held a 17-14 lead at the break and then went to work in the second half of the game.

Paced by Megan Smith’s game-high 15 points and a pressing defense that resulted in a number Concrete turnovers, Coupeville notched its first victory of the season, 41-31.

“We have a young team and I was happy with the way we played tonight,” coach Blake Severns said. “We used four freshmen and a couple of others who never played varsity before.”

The Wolves stretched the lead to 31-21 after three quarters of play and when Smith knocked down her second 3-pointer with 4:50 remaining in the game, Coupeville was in total command by 17 points, 39-22.

After that, Severns emptied the Wolf Pack bench and every member on the team got time on the court.

Marie Hesselgrave scored eight points, including one from downtown, and Courtney Boyd along with freshman Cassidi Rosenkrance chipped in with four points each.

Natasha Smith had 10 points for the Lions and teammates Kelsey Barnett and Taylor Lee had eight points apiece.
