Friday Harbor handed the Coupeville High School football team its first loss of the season, stopping the Wolves 17-0 Friday, Sept. 14, at Mickey Clark Field.
Coupeville, now 2-1 on the season, plays its final non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at La Conner (0-3).
Rain fell early and hard last Friday. The sloppy field and two stout defenses slowed Friday Harbor and Coupeville much of the night.
Both teams committed two turnovers in the first half, and both Coupeville mistakes were costly.
A fumble inside the 20-yard line stopped the Wolves’ biggest threat, and an interception late in the half gave the Wolverines the ball at the Coupeville 16, setting up a Friday Harbor field goal.
The Wolverines pushed the lead to 9-0 in the third quarter on a 27-yard run by Emeron Gleiser.
After lightning flashed and halted the game for a mandatory break, Friday Harbor added another touchdown to go up 15-0.
Later, the Wolves suffered a safety to finish the scoring.
“It was a tough, physical game,” Coupeville coach Marcus Carr said. “Defensively we played well; however, on offense we still haven’t gotten it going. We moved the ball well at times but we are still being plagued by poor execution when it matters the most.
“Friday Harbor is a good team and they were able to limit the things that we like to do. We have to get better on the offensive side of the ball, so that will be the main focus at practice this week.”
