Winning its final two games in the three-day, 42nd annual Bellevue College High School Holiday Tournament, the Oak Harbor boys basketball team placed fourth in the eight-team event.

Oak Harbor defeated Monroe 60-53 Friday and Seattle’s Nathan Hale 55-51 Saturday at Bellevue College. The Wildcats lost in the first round 57-45 to Kentwood Thursday. Kentwood went on to finish second, losing a close game in the finals to undefeated and No. 1-ranked 2A Renton.

Against Monroe, Oak Harbor dominated the early play and led 19-9 after the first quarter. It led 32-26, 44-37 after the second and third periods.

Postman Dayne Herron beat up the Bearcats inside with 18 points. Drew Washington, coming off a dismal shooting night against Kentwood, drilled six of nine shots and finished with 14 points. JoJo Webster tallied 11 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Gabe Groeing had eight points, Chris Hailer six and Dyllan Harris three.

Oak Harbor out shot Monroe 47.9 percent (23-for-48) to 38.1 percent (16-for-42) and committed five fewer turnovers, 15 to 20.

Coach Mike Washington said, “I was very pleased with our effort.”

Against Nathan Hale, Oak Harbor withstood a second-quarter onslaught by the Raiders.

Drew Washington hit two threes and Harris another as Oak Harbor led 16-10 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Nathan Hale went on a run, out scoring Oak Harbor 24-9, coach Washington said, and his players didn’t handle the adversity well.

“We started playing at their pace,” he said.

Down 34-25 at the half, the Wildcats made some adjustments and regained the lead 41-40 heading into the final period.

One of the keys, coach Washington said, was the play of point guard Webster.

In the first half Webster was frustrated by Nathan Hale’s 1-3-1 zone and finished the game with only two points.

In the second, he focused on running the offense, Washington said, and dished out seven assists. Most of those went to Drew Washington.

When the Raider zone collapsed on Webster, who likes to penetrate, it left Washington open for threes. The junior wing launched 17 and hit six, finishing with a game-high 24 points.

Coach Washington said Webster also picked up his defensive play, getting into passing lanes in the third quarter and finishing with three steals.

Hailer connected on five of seven shots and recorded 10 points and eight rebounds, Herron had eight points, Groenig six and Harris five.

Mike Washington said the officials “let the kids play.” The result was only two free throw attempts by the Wildcats, who missed both. Hale was only 2-for-10 from the line.

Oak Harbor (7-3) hosts Sedro-Woolley (6-4) in a nonleague game at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2.
