A pair of wins this weekend helped the Oak Harbor High School soccer team record as many victories in its first four matches as it did in all of 2012.

The Wildcats won 1-0 at Everett Friday, March 22, and then 2-1 at Ferndale Saturday. The victory over the Seagulls gives Oak Harbor a 2-0 Wesco record, and the nonleague win over Ferndale lifted the season mark to 3-1.

Against Everett, the Wildcats pestered Everett goalie Sergio Barrera all night, finally breaking through in the later stages of the match. Gavin Stewart hit the game winner off an assist from Ben McCornack.

Coach Brian Thompson said, “We had many chances to score but their goal keeper came up with some amazing saves.”

Thompson said his club played well the first half, then was sluggish to start the second until the final 15 minutes when Stewart struck with “a great goal.”

Kevin Silveira produced the shutout, his first in high school, according to Thompson.

After the playing on Everett’s turf, Oak Harbor faced Ferndale in a “mud bowl that slowed both teams down,” according to Thompson.

Caley Powers, who had several near misses, scored in the 33rd minutes with an assist from Alex Krantz.

The Golden Eagles soon tied it up, then Matt Jensen scored on a breakaway in the 79th minute.

Thompson said, “It could have been a higher scoring game for both teams if not for the mud. Kevin Silveira did another outstanding job, stopping a penalty kick caused by a foul in the box. It wasn’t pretty but it was a win.”

Ferndale dropped its seventh straight match and fifth by one goal.

Thompson lauded the strong fan support Oak Harbor received in its two road wins.
