Wildcats thump T-birds 17-4 / Softball

The start wasn’t promising but the finish was fantastic.

The Oak Harbor High School softball team walloped visiting Shorewood 17-4 in five innings Tuesday, April 24, to break a six-game losing streak.

The Wildcats also lost this week, falling 11-0 in five innings at second-place Everett (11-1, 12-2) Wednesday.

Oak Harbor (2-11, 2-13) hosts Arlington (2-11, 2-13) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 27.

The game started like others this season as the Wildcats found themselves in an early hole. The first three Thunderbirds got aboard and all three came around to score.

Undeterred, Oak Harbor matched Shorewood (3-8, 3-10) and upped the ante by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first.

The Wildcat scoring machine never stopped as Oak Harbor added a run in the second, nine in the third and two more in the fourth.

Cierra LeGendre and Rylee Joseph each scored three runs for the Wildcats. Miranda Wilson, Brooke Gilham, Samantha Payne and Madelynn Tucker all scored twice.

In all, 29 of Oak Harbor’s 36 batters reached base.

Joseph was the winning pitcher with help from LeGendre in relief.

The Seagulls’ Kassidy Miller threw a one-hitter, striking out 11.

Eleanor Tucker doubled for the Wildcats in the third inning. The only other Oak Harbor base runner was Wilson, who led off the game with a walk.
