The Oak Harbor High School wrestling team collected two wins at the PanCan double dual meet at Renton’s Hazen High School Friday, Jan. 17.

The Wildcats defeated the host Highlanders 48-29 and Highline 48-24.

The match is an annual event hosted by Hazen and its coach Rory Magana, an Oak Harbor High School grad, to bring awareness to pancreatic cancer. Rod Magana, Rory’s father and longtime Oak Harbor resident, died from the disease.

All of the Wildcats’ non-forfeit wins in the two matches were by pins.

Winners against Hazen were Garrett Stahl (106 pounds, 3:29), Christian Bertram (113, 3:59), Jeremy Vester (132, 3:01), Jahleel Vester (138, 3:10), Kekai Tarrant (170, 1:25), Jacob Dugin (195, 3:07) and Ray Quinday (220, 1:12).

Winners in the Highline match were Carl Caidic (120, 3:49), Mark Johnston (152, 3:45), Tarrant (170, 3:36), Dugin (195, 3:48) and Quinday (220,1:09).

Oak Harbor coach Peter Esvelt said, “(The) upper weights stepped up in big ways, especially against Highline, allowing both Vesters to save a match toward the match limit of 33.”

The Wildcats travel to Stanwood for a 7 p.m. match Friday, Jan. 24.
