A powerful display in singles carried the Oak Harbor High School tennis team to their first victory of the season Friday, March 27, on the Wildcats’ courts.

Oak Harbor nipped visiting Everett 4-3 as the ‘Cats won all four singles matches in straight sets in the Wesco North opener for both schools.

The loss was just the second for Everett in five matches.

“Our singles players played well,” Oak Harbor coach Horace Mells said. “Doubles are slowly getting on track.”

Makenzie Perry won in first singles 6-3, 6-2; and was followed by wins from AnnaBelle Whitefoot (6-2, 6-0), Tamia Rios (6-4, 6-0) and Alyssa Eden (7-6[2], 6-2).

Doubles was a different story as Oak Harbor dropped all three matches: Hannah Gluth/Ellysa Bonganay lost 6-3, 6-1; Patrice Woodworth/Ria Bains lost 6-3, 6-2; and Emma Lerch/Erina Horikawa lost 6-1, 6-3.

Oak Harbor’s Elma Marie Empinado and Julia Smith won an exhibition doubles match 8-5.

Oak Harbor (1-0, 1-4) goes to Stanwood (1-0, 2-2) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31.
