For the third time in four wins, the Oak Harbor High School tennis team eked out a 4-3 victory, this time over visiting Marysville-Pilchuck Monday, April 14.

Oak Harbor collected wins in first and fourth singles from Makenzie Perry (6-1, 7-6[4]) and Faith Franssen (6-1, 6-3), and in second and third doubles from AnnaBelle Whitefoot/Hannah Gluth (6-0, 6-1) and Erina Horikawa/Ellysa Bonganay (6-3, 6-2).

“Makenzie Perry played well, especially during the first set, with excellent net play,” said coach Horace Mells. “The second set got a little tight, but she hung in there and won the tie breaker with consistent ground strokes.”

“Faith Franssen played a consistent and controlled match,” he added.

In regard to the doubles wins, Mells said, “AnnaBelle Whitefoot and Hannah Gluth have shown great improvement from match to match and compliment each other extremely well.”

Noting that Bonganay and Horikawa played in their first match together, Mells said the pair “had good communication and a winning strategy that complimented their style of play.”

Zena Husler (7-5, 6-3) and Jamie Estrella (6-3, 6-2) lost in second and third singles, and Chelsea Admire/Alyssa Eden fell in first doubles (6-2, 7-5).

Mells said Husler, Admire and Eden all ran a half marathon the day before, but Admire and Eden “played one of their best matches of the season with a lot of great shop making.”

Oak Harbor (1-2, 4-2) goes to Mountlake Terrace (0-4, 1-6) Tuesday, April 15, and then hosts Meadowdale (1-3, 2-5) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17.
