A day after piling up double-digit runs in a 10-6 win at Everett, the Oak Harbor High School baseball team could manage only one in nine innings in a 2-1 loss to the visiting Seagulls Wednesday, April 8.

The two teams finish their three-game series at 4 p.m. at Everett Friday, April 10.

Oak Harbor (2-1, 4-3) put together a bookend offense in the 10-6 win Tuesday, scoring six runs in the first inning and four in the sixth.

The Wildcats flexed their muscles in the first inning with three extra base hits. Kevyn Johnson opened the game with a triple, and, after a pop out, Brent Mertins singled him home. Tyler Snavely and C.J. Meders followed with RBI doubles.

After Danny Wolfe and Quentin Tungate walked, Sean Erskine’s fielder’s choice scored one run and Johnson ripped his second hit of the inning, a two-run single.

From the second through the fifth innings, Oak Harbor registered only two hits — a double by Meders in the second and a single by Snavely in the fourth.

Walks to Christian Bertram and Mertins started the four-run sixth. Snavely loaded the bases with a single, then Meders singled in a run. Mertins scored the second run on a passed ball and Snavely scored on Steve Richards’ ground out. Robert Herring’s triple scored Meders for the final run.

Starting pitcher Snavely retired the Seagulls in order in the first three innings. In the fourth, Everett scored three runs on three errors and two hits.

The Seagulls added three runs in the seventh on two hits, an error and a sacrifice.

Only one of Everett’s six runs were earned.

Meders went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Snavely was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and RBI.

Johnson had two hits, including a triple, and scored a run.

In Wednesday’s extra-inning game, the contest begged for a clutch base hit as both teams squandered several chances to win.

Everett’s Bryant Greene finally came through with a big hit, ripping a two-out, two-strike single down the left field line to drive in the winning run.

Oak Harbor left eight and Everett nine men in scoring position in the game.

Oak Harbor starter Danny Wolfe cruised through the first five innings, allowing only four base runners as his defense turned three double plays.

In the top of the sixth, a walk, single and walk loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice forced one runner at the plate, but a single by Lewis Elliott drove in the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Chris Trisler walked with two outs. Courtesy runner Bertram advanced on a single by Tungate and scored on a wild pitch.

Oak Harbor was poised to win it with runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play wiped out the threat.

The Seagulls had a runner at third with one out in the eighth, but third baseman Meders nailed him at the plate trying to score on a ground ball.

Everett (1-2, 2-4) opened the ninth with a double off reliever Johnson. Johnson came back with a pair of strikeouts, but Greene followed with his game-winning single.

Oak Harbor put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, a single by Tungate and a hit batter (Johnson), but a strikeout and ground out ended the game.

Meders and Tungate each collected two hits for Oak Harbor.
