The Oak Harbor High School and Lynnwood soccer teams battled, literally, to a 1-1 tie Monday, Oct. 27, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

The physical match, devoid of whistles and full of shoves and elbows, left Oak Harbor with a 1-7-3 Wesco record, 5-7-3 overall, with one match left.

The Wildcats wrap up the season at Everett (2-7-2, 4-8-3) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29.

The Royals (1-8-2, 1-11-3) scored in the first half.

Oak Harbor’s Suzanne Kaltenbach, taking a cross from Lauryn Plush, fought off a collision with a Royal to take advantage of an open goal and dribbled in the equalizer midway through the second half.

Both teams failed to score in the two five-minute overtime periods.

“We had a few chances but couldn’t finish it off,” coach Mike Lonborg said. “Pretty much our whole season in a nut shell.  Chances, chances and more chances but no goals.

“Worked hard but no closure; ties don’t get the job done in Wesco this year.”

Part of the lack of goals can be traced to injuries. Among the missing is leading scorer Mary Johnston.

Lonborg said Alyssa Cross and Kaltenbach “had very solid games.”
