After losing 52-37 to visiting Everett Monday, Feb. 9, in the final regular season game, the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team journeys to Marysville Getchell at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, with hopes of keeping its season alive.

Oak Harbor (3-7, 4-16) and Getchell (3-7, 9-11) finished the Wesco 3A North season tied for fourth, forcing Tuesday’s tie-breaking game.

The winner will then get to play its third game in three days when it meets the South division’s fourth-place team, Shorewood (5-7, 10-10), in a district play-in game Wednesday.

If Oak Harbor defeats Marysville Getchell, it will host the Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. in a game to determine the final Wesco entry into the district tournament.

Oak Harbor and Getchell split during the regular season. The Chargers won 45-35 Jan. 16 in Marysville, then the Wildcats won at home 46-43 Feb. 4.

In the loss to Everett (6-4, 10-10), Oak Harbor took a 6-5 lead midway through the first period, then the Seagulls finished the quarter with a 10-2 run.

Everett’s 6-foot-2 post Katy Hedington scored eight straight points for the Seagulls, using her height, size and soft touch to burn the Wildcats in the paint.

The Everett lead reached 10 in the second period, then with the help of two Jinai Guzman baskets, Oak Harbor cut it to five, 22-17, with a minute left in the half.

The Seagulls led 26-18 at the break.

Everett pushed the lead to 12, 30-18, then Oak Harbor trimmed the gap to seven, 33-26, behind a three-ball from Bryn Langrock and a pair of Julie Jansen baskets.

Oak Harbor went five minutes without scoring in the final period, and the Seagulls went up by 19, 47-28, with two minutes left.

Rashanna Graham led the Wildcats with 10 points, while Janae Payne and Jansen scored seven each.

Langrock and Guzman finished with five each, AnnaBelle Whitefoot two and Haley Lundstrom one.

Lundstrom also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Payne collected six rebounds and Graham two steals.

Hedington led all scorers with 16 points.

Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said he was pleased with his team’s performance, adding, “our goal was to win four league games, and we were just shy of that.”
