The Oak Harbor High School boys golf team finished second in the Wesco 3A North tournament Wednesday, May 13, at Everett’s Legion Golf Course, good for second overall in the final division standings.
Stanwood won the divisional tournament with 387 strokes. Oak Harbor shot 417, Arlington 421 and Marysville Getchell 443. Marysville-Pilchuck and Everett did not have enough players to qualify for team scores.
The first four holes of the tournament were played in heavy rain, according to Oak Harbor coach David Smith, then drizzle continued to dampen the golfers and the scores throughout the remainder of the match.
Raiden Poe, with a 37 on the first nine, and Mason Dieter, with a 38 on the back nine, topped Oak Harbor with 81s, nine over par.
Ben Fikse shot a season-best 83; Aaron Kelley also fired an 83. Steven Timm finished with an 89, and Nick Whitley carded a 95.
Quenton Borseth of Stanwood took medalist honors with a 74.
Poe and Dieter finished eighth in the tournament’s individual standings.
“All the kids were steady,” Smith said. “We had a lot of pars.
“I am really proud of them because they did not let the bad holes take them out of their game.”
Oak Harbor now journeys to the district championship match at noon Monday and Tuesday, May 18 and 19, at Marysville’s Battle Creek Golf Course.
The top 17 finishers will qualify for the state tournament.
