Wildcats host qualifying regatta / Sailing

The Wildcat sailing team hosts a district qualifying regatta this weekend, April 8 and 9.

Twenty-five high school teams are registered for the event, which will include varsity and junior varsity classes. Each team will have two divisions, A and B. The A boat will compete twice and then the B boat twice, continuing that sequence until the wind dies or daylight ends. At the end of all racing, the A and B results are added together to determine the winner.

The races are slated to start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

After Saturday’s action, the Oak Harbor Yacht Club will serve the sailors dinner and the band Backyard Bison will provide entertainment. The OHYC will host a pancake breakfast Sunday.

Flintstone Park, Pioneer Way (between SE Midway and SE Pasek) and the Oak Harbor Marina breakwater are the best viewing spots for spectators, according to Wildcat coach Erik Mann.

“The Wildcats have had a great start to the season and entertain high hopes for the weekend,” Mann said.

Oak Harbor placed between fourth and seventh in the four regattas already held this spring.
