It was a beautiful day for the Oak Harbor track team’s lone home meet of the season.

The sunny weather and the performances made for an outstanding time as the boys and girls squads each outpointed Monroe at Oak Harbor High School on Tuesday.

I’ve been doing this for four years and this is the best day I’ve seen,” said history teacher Mike Fisher who was helping to measure discus throws in the sun.

The Wildcats were scheduled to host two home meets this season, with Mount Vernon and Cascade coming to town on March 21, but bad weather forced a cancellation. The meet will not be made up.

The Oak Harbor boys won 16 of the 17 events on the day, cruising to a 110.5 to 34.5 victory over the Bearcats. Leading the way was senior Stefan Kulpa, who earned victories in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and anchored the winning1600 meter relay squad.

“We were very blessed with the weather today,” said Kulpa. “Considering with what we have had at practice.”

Kulpa ran the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.4, leading a Wildcats 1-2-3 finish with senior Jacob Ovalle taking second and sophomore Scott Spears finishing third. The senior wasn’t too pleased with his time, but he was happy to pick up the win.

“I didn’t have a really good race,” he said. “I ran a lot better last weekend.”

Last weekend Kulpa won both hurdle events at the Liberty Invitational, helping the Cats take the team title on the day. The Cats outpointed nine other teams at the meet in Renton to win the competition for the second straight year.

“It was a nice win,” said boys head track coach Kevin Allen. “The competition wasn’t the best but I don’t want to take anything away from the guys – they did a great job.”

Kulpa placed at district last year in both events and is aiming for something bigger this season – a trip to the state meet in Tacoma at the end of May.

“I’m hoping for a league title,” he said after his 300 race. “There’s some stiff competition but I feel that I can make it all the way to state.”

Other two-event winners at the dual meet against Monroe were freshman Chris Wichers, who won the 1600 and 3200 meter races; senior Ray Damasco, who won the 100 and 200 meter sprints; and junior Matt Constantino, who took the discus and the javelin.

“Things are going pretty good so far this season,” said Kulpa. “We’ve got real good talent, but we just lack depth.”

The Wildcat girls were not as hard on the Bearcats, but still earned a convincing 93-51 victory.

“It was the last home meet for the seniors and they went out winners,” said assistant coach Seth Hodges. “The seniors are turning over the team to some good talent as 63 of Oak Harbor’s 78 non-relay point were scored by underclassmen.”

Much like Kulpa on the boys side, sophomore Tina Nicolas picked up wins in both hurdles races and led a Wildcat sweep in the 300. Nicolas won the event with a time of 52.8, while senior Yuki Norton and freshman Amanda Gordon took second and third respectively.

Other double-winners on the day were Nikki Barone, who won the discus with a throw of 96-09 (breaking her personal best by over six feet), and the javelin. Freshman Hazel Sapida won the 200 meter and the long jump and led off the winning 400-meter relay team.

Senior Cherie Freeman led a Wildcats 1-2 finish in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 32-6. Freshman Audrey Neeley finished second with a throw if 29-06, three feet farther than her previous personal best.

The next up for both the boys and girls is a trip across the mountains to compete at the Cashmere Invitational on Saturday, April 13.
