Going off script for one quarter proved disastrous for the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team in a 77-31 loss at Stanwood Friday, Jan. 8.

A night later, Oak Harbor lost a non-league game at Anacortes 60-46.

Stanwood led only 12-7 after the first quarter then outscored Oak Harbor 31-2 in the second period when the Wildcats strayed from their game plan. Both Oak Harbor points came at the foul line as the Wildcats connected on only two of eight free throws in the quarter and three of 12 in the game.

“We had a good plan of slowing it down, Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said.

He added that the Wildcats wanted to be patient against the Spartan press and were willing to suffer shot-clock violations if necessary.

“We did a good job of that in all the quarters but the second,” Atkins said. “We tried to play fast with them in the second and had 18 turnovers in the quarter resulting in 22 point off those TOs.

“I thought we did a much better job of that in the second half where they only had eight points off turnovers.”

Bryn Langrock led Oak Harbor with a game-high 18 points, including hitting a trio of three-balls in the third quarter. Julie Jansen scored five points, AnnaBelle Whitefoot four, Lexi Jones three and Matti Miesle one.

Haley Strowbridge, one of four Spartans (1-0, 7-3) in double figures, scored 17 points for Stanwood.

Anacortes (7-5) jumped to an 18-11 first quarter lead and then continued to pull away by outscoring Oak Harbor in the second and third periods. The Seahawks led 28-17 at halftime and 42-27 after three quarters.

Langrock, again, led Oak Harbor, scoring 12 points. Deja Bunch chipped in with 10, Rashanna Graham seven, Whitefoot six, Janae Payne five, Jansen four and Miesle two.

Brooke Geffe scored 20 points for Anacortes.

The Wildcats (0-1, 4-7) now face one of the state’s top teams when they host Arlington (1-0, 11-0) at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13.
