“Oak Harbor’s gymnasium was brimming with cheer Saturday as the Wildcats hosted the 2001 Spirit Fest. Oak Harbor earned three first place finishes, three second place finishes and Francisco McGee took first in the individual category as the Wildcats competed against 16 other schools.Oak Harbor cheerleaders have been putting in many hours at the gym to get ready for the this competition and it certainly paid off, said Oak Harbor cheer coach Pam Headridge.Oak Harbor dominated as they won every team competition they entered. The Wildcats took first place in the Co-Ed Power Cheer with 288 points, Dance with 262 points and Junior Varsity Power Cheer with 256.5 points. All scores are out of 300 possible points.Both the varsity and JV have been practicing two hours after school, five days a week and then cheering at the basketball games or wrestling meets in the evenings, said Headridge. It has been physically demanding but in the end the Cats were victorious.The varsity team performed a near flawless routine, which included a fully extended arabesque pyramid that rolled down and back up to a fully extended heel stretch pyramid. According to Headridge, synchronization and and tight stunts are why the teams did so well. Every jump tumbling pass, step and stunt were choreographed from start to finish, said Headridge. It looked like it moved as a unit.For many on the junior varsity squad this was their first time competing.It was the best I have ever seen our JV squad perform at Spirt Fest, said Headridge. McGee competed against 12 other competitors as he earned 279 points during the individual competition. Two Oak Harbor teams tied for second with 272 points during the five-girl stunt-team competition. Oak Harbor also finished second in the Pairs Competition. The competition were scored by two panels of three judges from Cheertec and the National Cheerleading Association. “
