Wildcats come close against Cubs

Oak Harbor pitcher Whitney Osborn threw an excellent game in Tuesday’s non-league softball matchup against Sedro-Woolley and for six innings, the Wildcats appeared to be on the verge of snapping their six-game losing streak.

The Wildcats held a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning, but the Cubs managed to push three runs across the plate and two more in the top of the seventh, to leave the diamond at Hillcrest Elementary School with a 6-4 victory.

Coach Chris Rankin said he was proud of the way the team played and hoped this was a game that they could build the remainder of the season around.

Sedro-Woolley scored a run with two out in the top of the first inning, but the Wildcats came back to tie the score with a run in the bottom of the second.

Lauren Lindsey, Sam Shulock and Osborn collected three- straight singles with one out to load the bases. Emily Meagher was then hit with a pitch to score Lindsey with the tying run.

Oak Harbor took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on an infield single by Kim Mowbray, a stolen base, a single by Jessica Kallander and a pair of passed balls.

Osborn was cruising along until the top of the sixth when Sarah Moquin and Cheyenne Best singled for the Cubs.

Kelsey Gibbs then drew a walk to load the bases and all three players scored on an infield throwing error to give Sedro-Woolley a 4-3 lead.

“This was one of those games where both teams were evenly matched,” Rankin said. “In a game like this, you have to make the plays and can’t afford to make a mistake.”

In the bottom of the seventh, Nikki Mowbray reached base on an error and scored on Kallander’s two-out double.

Kallander was 2-for-4.

Arlington 6, Oak Harbor 0

Returning to WesCo North ac-

tion Wednesday afternoon at Arlington, the Wildcats struck out 12 times against pitcher Jocelynn Probert and lost 6-0.

Oak Harbor is now 1-9 in league games and 2-11 overall.

The Wildcats had a difficult time at the plate against Probert, who gave up just three hits in the game and didn’t surrender a walk.

Arlington scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the bottom of the fifth.

Kaylee Meders was 2-for-2 for Oak Harbor.
