Wildcats close out regular season, head to subregional tournaments / Wrestling

A fifth-place finish by Ella Erikson was the highlight of the Oak Harbor High School girls wrestling team’s efforts at the Lady Knights Invitational at Mariner High School Saturday, Jan. 26.

Forty-two schools participated in the tournament hosted by Kamiak High School.

Erikson (115 pounds) opened the meet with an 18-3 win, then lost by a fall (3:26) in the second round to eventually champion Molly Williams of Redmond.

Erikson then won three straight to claim fifth. She won twice by pins (2:35 and 4:18) before defeating Megan Matthews of Yelm, the girl she beat in the opening match, 9-0 for fifth.

Three other Wildcats took part, two in the junior varsity division.

Hannah Shinn (235) lost twice by falls (:29, 2:35) in varsity action.

Nicole Sipes won two of three matches to claim second in the JV 126-130 class. She won 6-3 and 9-4 before losing by a pin (3:33).

Isabella Moss dropped three matches by falls (2:15, 3:34, 1:00) in the JV 120-124 division.

The Oak Harbor girls now head to the subregional tournament Friday (3:30 p.m.) and Saturday (9:30 a.m.), Feb. 1 and 2, at North Creek High School in Bothell.

The top four in each weight class advance to the regional tournament at Sedro-Woolley High School Saturday, Feb. 9.

The Oak Harbor boys go to Everett High School for their subregional Friday (5 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m.), Feb. 1 and 2.

The first four in each weight division move on to the regional at Snohomish High School Saturday, Feb. 9.
