Four individual champions spurred the Oak Harbor High School wrestling team to second place in the 10-team Sky Valley Invitational in Sultan Saturday, Jan. 11.

Christian Bertram (113 pounds), Jeremy Vester (132), Jahleel Vester (138) and Mark Johnston (152) earned titles for the Wildcats.

The host Turks won the team title, posting 184.5 points, followed by Oak Harbor with 159.

Tyler Adamson (285) finished second, and Jackson Constant (285) and Sebastian Ceaser picked up thirds for Oak Harbor.

Adamson, according to coach Peter Esvelt, recorded the “surprise match of the tournament” when he pinned Eastside Catholic’s Alexander Neal. Adamson was competing as a non-scoring second entry in the weight class for the Wildcats.

“Another good team effort,” Esvelt said. “We were able to see improvements in a lot of our wrestlers.”

At the Arlington Rumble JV tournament Saturday, Oak Harbor’s Sam Zook and Austin Tayler finished first, and Mike Laningham and Carl Caidic placed second.

The Wildcats now head into a busy week. First they open league action at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Marysville-Pilchuck (2-4).

At 6 p.m. Friday they head to Hazen High School along with Highline for the annual PanCan double dual meet. The meet is designed to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, which took the life of longtime Oak Harbor resident Rod Magana, who is the father of Hazen coach Rory Magana, an OHHS graduate.

Saturday, the Wildcats take part in the Jack Reynolds Memorial Tournament at 10 a.m. at Mercer Island High School.
