The North Whidbey Aquatic Club traveled to Federal Way June 27 to 29 to participate in the West Coast Invitational.
The indoor 50-meter Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center proved to be the place to beat the heat outside, but NWAC’ers made some heat of their own in the pool.
As a team, the Aquajets raced to 74 percent personal records (PR) in their individual races.
Making the 100 percent PR achievement for both individual and relay swims were: Irysh Concepcion, Therese Desquitado, Ciara Hu, Price Hu, Jacob Jepsen, Joey Jepsen, Josh Jepsen, Mara Powers, Laura Rodeheffer and Cole Weinstein.
Three NWAC’ers bested their first individual Pacific Northwest Swimming (PNS) Championships cuts.
These swimmers were Tricia Desquitado in the 11-year-old 100 and 200 breaststroke events, Joey Jepsen in the 10 year old 50 breastroke and Kennedy Trisler, age 11, in the 100 backstroke.
Five Aquajets added new PNS cuts to their list of qualifying times: Jacob Jepsen, age 14, in the 100 freestyle; Olivia Meyer, age 12, in the 400 freestyle and 200 breastroke; Brandon Vagt, age 15, in the 400 individual medley; and Rachel Weinstein, age 15, in the 200 breastroke.
Caley Powers took charge of the boys 11- to-12-year-old age group for NWAC by setting four long course meter team records 200 freestyle at 2:20.20; the 50 butterfly in a time of 32.82; the 100 butterfly at fly 1:12.20; and finally the 100 freestyle with a clocking of 1:06.08.
Powers’ 100 butterfly time also qualifies him to swim in the Western Zones Meet to be held in Oregon later this year. He will also compete as a member of the PNS team against all qualifying swimmers west of the Rocky Mountains.
Laura Rosen set a LCM team record for 11- to-12-year-olds in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:34.08. She also powered to her own Western States Zones cuts going 1:24.11 in the 100 breaststroke and 1:09.85 in the 100 butterfly. Rosen also captured second place in the overall girls’ 11- to-12-year-old rankings against a competitive field of Seattle-area swimmers.
The girls 10-and-under 200 medley relay team achieved the highest finish among Aquajet teams placing fifth overall and earning 28 points. The team was composed of Mara Powers, Laura Rodeheffer, Molly Vagt and Marissa Morris.
