Wezeman, Mitchell qualify for district tournament / Tennis

Two Oak Harbor seniors finished in the top four at the Wesco North singles tennis tournament to earn berths in the district tournament.

Oak Harbor seniors Jackson Wezeman and JJ Mitchell placed in the top four at the Western Conference North Divisional Tennis Tournament at Snohomish Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 18 and 19, to earn spots in the district playoffs.

The district tournament is 1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 25 and 26, at Arlington High School. The top three finishers in singles and doubles qualify for the state tournament.

Wezeman, the No. 2 seed, placed second in singles at the divisional tournament, while Mitchell, the fourth seed, will play off for third and fourth Friday, Oct. 21.

Oak Harbor’s two doubles teams dropped their matches in the single-elimination play-in round.

Tuesday, Mitchell defeated Stanwood’s Trey Austin 6-2, 6-1. Wezeman’s first match was rained out and pushed to Wednesday.

Also Tuesday, No. 4 seeded Nathaniel Haskin and Peyton Headrick of Stanwood defeated Oak Harbor’s Sidney Thomas and Trenton Cone 6-0, 6-1 in doubles; while Wildcats John Bird and Matthew Kolden fell 6-0, 6-0 to third-seeded Steve Sanders and Zack Hatzenbeler of Stanwood.

In Wednesday’s quarterfinals, Wezeman won 6-0, 6-0 over Stanwood’s Carson Midthun; and Mitchell beat Everett’s Jacob Rotert 6-1, 6-2.

In the semifinals, top-seeded Kincaid Norris of Snohomish stopped Mitchell 6-1, 6-0; and Wezeman dumped Everett’s Ryan Burt 6-1, 6-2.

Norris claimed the singles title with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wezeman.

Mitchell clinched a district berth with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Snohomish’s Nolan Armbruster in the consolation semi-finals.
