Edmonds-Woodway spoiled new Oak Harbor coach Jon Weston’s debut as the Warriors defeated the host Wildcats 64-43 in boys basketball Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Edmonds-Woodway scored 14 consecutive points late in the first half to take a 10-point lead and then withstood an Oak Harbor third-period rally for the season-opening win.

The teams, showing first-game jitters, played an uneven first quarter as the Warriors took an 8-7 lead.

Behind four points from Dyllan Harris and a three ball by Zach Jones, Oak Harbor went up 16-12 midway through the second period.

Scoring in a variety of ways — off three balls, off turnovers, off offensive put-backs and off free throws, Edmonds-Woodway rattled off a 14-0 run and led 26-18 at the break.

The Warriors scored the first two hoops of the second half to go up 30-18, then Oak Harbor cut the lead to four, 31-27, thanks to seven points from Harris.

E-W answered with eight straight points and the Wildcats never trimmed the gap to less than 10 the rest of the way.

Harris led all scorers with 21 points. Jones finished with eight; Ben Fikse and Jake Sturdevant four each; and Diangelo McKinney, Savion Hollins-Passmore and Sean Erskine two apiece.

Ten players scored for Edmonds-Woodway, led by Tre’var Holland and Benji Parrilla with 12 each.

Weston said turning the ball over and allowing penetration by the Warriors were the major contributors to the Wildcats’ downfall.

He, however, liked the effort of his team: “The guys didn’t give up. We made a nice little push with three minutes left; we still had some fire.”

“We showed our athleticism,” Weston added. “Now we need to improve on fundamentals and play together.”

Oak Harbor travels to Shoreline to meet Shorecrest (0-1) at 7:15 Friday, Dec. 5, and then hosts Burlington-Edison (0-1) at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.
