A high-scoring second quarter helped propel the Edmonds-Woodway High School boys basketball team to an 80-55 win over visiting Oak Harbor Wednesday, Dec. 19.
Down 17-12 going into the second period, the Warriors (1-2, 3-3) scored 29 points to take a 42-30 lead into the locker room.
Oak Harbor (1-1, 2-4) will try to get back on the winning track when it faces Lynnwood (2-1, 2-5) at home at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.
The Wildcats came out hot at Edmonds-Woodway, jumping to a 9-0 lead. Dorian Hardin scored 7 points and Haven Brown hit two three-pointers as the Wildcats held the lead throughout the first quarter.
Midway through the opening period, however, the Warriors’ press started to break down the Wildcats, according to coach John Weston.
“We turned the ball over way too much and allowed them to dictate the tempo of the game,” he said.
Chinedu Acholonu scored 9 points and EJ Thomas and Nuer Bol 6 each to lead the Warriors’ second-quarter surge.
Thomas connected on a trio of three-pointers in the third quarter to offset 8 points from Oak Harbor’s Austin Boesch, and E-W led 60-42 after three quarters.
The Wildcats managed to trim the gap to 12 points midway through the fourth period, but they were forced to gamble on defense and commit fouls as the quarter progressed. The gambles didn’t payoff and Edmonds-Woodway pulled away.
Hardin scored 17 points, 14 in the first half, to pace Oak Harbor. Boesch tallied 13 points, all in the second half; Brown had 11, Kevin Schuldt 8, Terrell Crumpton 2, Andrew Baloy 2 and Matt Kelley 2.
Five different Warriors scored in double figures, led by Boi with 18. Thomas had 15, all off three-pointers.
Edmonds-Woodway was 14-for-17 at the foul like; Oak Harbor just three of nine.
